Step into a world where faith meets cosmic dread in Cracked Chimes, a visually groundbreaking animated short film.
Set against the atmospheric backdrop of Leiden, Holland, in the early 17th century, the film adapts H.P. Lovecraft’s chilling sonnet "St. Toad's" into a mesmerizing psychological journey. The story follows The Pilgrim, a spiritually troubled English Separatist working in a gloomy printing press. When a mysterious, cloaked Acolyte commissions him to print a cryptic copper plate adorned with esoteric symbols, the Pilgrim is thrust into a waking nightmare.
Driven by obsession and a dangerous quest for certainty, the Pilgrim wanders into a twisted, expressionist labyrinth of Leiden's dark alleys. Ignoring the frantic warnings of local greybeards to "Beware St. Toad’s cracked chimes!", he is inexorably drawn toward the distant, warped tolling of an otherworldly spire. His quest ultimately brings him to the corrupted St. Toad's church, where he must confront a sanity-shattering horror tied.
Relying on minimal dialogue and driven by an evocative musical score, Cracked Chimes is a triumph of modern animation. By seamlessly blending 3D modeling, original art, period references, and AI-generated imagery, the film crafts a deeply tactile, chiaroscuro-drenched aesthetic. Drawing inspiration from the eerie, grotesque surrealism of Bosch and Dürer, the film offers a uniquely immersive descent into cosmic terror.
Prepare to be mesmerized, and whatever you do— 'Beware St. Toad's Cracked Chimes!'

XXV. St. Toad’s
“Beware St. Toad’s cracked chimes!” I heard him scream
As I plunged into those mad lanes that wind
In labyrinths obscure and undefined
South of the river where old centuries dream.
He was a furtive figure, bent and ragged,
And in a flash had staggered out of sight,
So still I burrowed onward in the night
Toward where more roof-lines rose, malign and jagged.
No guide-book told of what was lurking here—
But now I heard another old man shriek:
“Beware St. Toad’s cracked chimes!” And growing weak,
I paused, when a third greybeard croaked in fear:
“Beware St. Toad’s cracked chimes!” Aghast, I fled—
Till suddenly that black spire loomed ahead.
